How to pray as a beginner

Start with honest words: Christian prayer is a relationship with God, not a performance.

Understand the context

In Matthew 6 Jesus warns against praying to impress others and piling up words. In Luke 11 the disciples ask him to teach them. Beginners need not conceal that they are learning. A quiet place may help, but neither a particular posture nor a long duration makes prayer authentic.

A Christian reading

Address God as Father, give thanks for something specific, name a difficulty and remember another person. Christian prayer draws on the words and life of Jesus. Asking is part of it, but so is listening: reading a short passage and pausing in silence can belong to the same conversation.

For reading and daily life

Try three minutes: one to read Matthew 6:6–8, one to speak honestly, and one to choose an act of kindness. You might say: Father, I do not always know how to speak to you; help me live today with trust and care for others. These are suggested words, not a required formula. Distraction does not cancel your prayer.

A question to consider

What real part of today could you bring to God without searching for impressive language?

The biblical text — Matthew 6:5–8

English — World English Bible

5 “When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward.

6 But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

7 In praying, don’t use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.

8 Therefore don’t be like them, for your Father knows what things you need before you ask him.
